What are auto racing radios?

Racing Radios for Auto and Boats

In racing, communications should be established at all times among the team members. With the roar of the motor and other sounds potentially drowning out communications, auto or boat racing digital radios can be used by the team to connect with each other. Whether it is the NASCAR, IRL, SCCA, NASA, or many other racing organizations, choosing the right racing tools keeps everyone in communications.

What are racing radios?

Car or boat racing communications equipment is a must at any race event. This equipment can also be used in road racing, off-roading, outdoor water sports, and recreational vehicle activities. A complete radio package often includes a coiled headset, a programmable radio system, scanner, receiver, and necessary cables and cords. The headset unit can be adaptable to a helmet for hands-free operations.
What are the features of a car or boat racing radio?
Quality in car communications starts with a noise cancelling helmet kit, a shield car/boat harness and a steering wheel mounted push to talk. Depending on the distance, a team might also want to add a roof mount antenna.
How do you choose an auto racing radio?
Like any essential component, a car racing radio connects all team members at critical points of the course. When choosing the right tool for your team, here are several things to consider when checking out this accessory:
  • Radio Quality: A quality radio will be used for many years without any issues. Digital racing radios are very popular and offer 100% communications
  • Digital vs Analog: Digital radios offer full track coverage up to 4 miles, 100% clear communications and are 100% private. Analog radios are less money and offer track coverage (with static) up to 4 miles.
  • UHF vs VHF: A versatile radio kit can be programmed to adapt to the standard UHF or VHF frequencies and channel for race track events. VHF is used for off road, aviation and marine environments (open line of sight). UHF is used for road racing tracks where hills, trees, and buildings are located.
Why do you need racing radios?
Communications between the pit crew, driver, and other team members should be established at the start. Clear audio should also be maintained throughout the race. These analog or digital tools ensure safety, security and other team notifications are transmitted in a clear and precise radio call. While on the track, drivers are separated from the rest of the team. With a functional car racing radio and headset, a spotter is able to see an incoming hazards or system safety issue while a driver navigates the track. With a radio and headset on hand, any member of the team can also send notice, ahead of time, if the car has tire, engine, or any system issues. This gives the pit crew time to prep and get you back on the track.

HOLE MOUNT PTT FOR RACING RADIOS

As a racer I love cool items that work, add safety and just make good sense like a bracket on a hole mount PTT system...

We started adding a PTT bracket years ago to our hole mount PTT systems because we felt that it was a safety issue. We couldn't tell folks to drill a large 5/8' hole in your steering wheel spoke. When (not if) you get in a major crash the wheel is going to the very best place to keep your hands (if you can) but having it fold over due to a weak spot is just not safe. So we started adding a mounting bracket kit and folks love it!

As a endurance driver I like that the button is hard mounted and easy to reach. Over the years we have seen the hole mount button hold up much better than a Velcro units, especially when other drivers are involved.

Here is a short video that shows the kit and the proper install http://youtu.be/ABCzKH5PS-w

Cheers, Shawn
